Cub Scout Overnights- TexasThis page focuses on cub scout overnights for groups in the Austin, TX area. These overnights are within about four hours of Austin, and so are generally in the Austin, San Antonio, Waco, Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston, and Corpus Christi areas. Although this page is titled "Cub Scout Overnights", most are available to any organized youth groups, including Girl Scouts/Brownies, and some are available to any interested group, including home school groups or even just a group of families. If anyone has any corrections to the information given below, or has any cub scout overnights that are not included here, please contact the Bee Caves District and they will forward it to me. San Antonio ZooWhat: "Roars and Snores" program at the San Antonio ZooWhere: San Antonio Zoo, a little over an hour from Austin. When: Friday and Saturday nights. Hours: Arrive at 6:30, done the next morning by 8:30. Who: Anyone age 6 and older, although they are somewhat flexible on the minimum age. How Many: Minimum of 20 participants, maximum of 40, although special arrangements can be made for groups of up to 60. How Much: $30/person. Admission to the zoo the following day is included. Sleeping Accommodations: Participants bring sleeping bags, pillows, and sleeping pads/cots/air mattresses and sleep in the education center at the zoo. A limited number of cots (nice cots!) are available to rent for $5/night. Food: Does not include dinner, but does include a nighttime snack and continental breakfast. Plenty of places to eat dinner within 5-10 minutes of the zoo. Activites: Night hike, several animal encounters and demonstrations, educational activities. Hours: 6:00 pm until 8:30. Who: Anyone in the first grade and older. How Many: Minimum of 15 participants. Maximum of 100. One adult for every five scouts required. How Much: $30/person for members of the zoo, $35/person for non-members. Sleeping Accommodations: Groups of less than 35 will sleep in the aquarium. Groups of 35+ will sleep outside in tents in the meadows. Food: Pizza dinner is served, as well as a snack, and a continental breakfast the next morning. Hours: 6:30 p.m. to 10 a.m. for Safari, Texas Wild!, Outdoor Explorers and Behind-the-Scenes, 6:30 p.m. to 10:30 a.m. for Deluxe. Who: 6-years-old to Adult. Two adult chaperones, 18 years and older, are required for every 15 children 6-years-old through twelfth grade. How Many: Minimum group size is 15 participants, maximum is 150. How Much: Safari or Texas Wild! Overnight - $45 per participant, including chaperones; Safari or Texas Wild! Deluxe Overnight - $55 per participant, including chaperones; Outdoor Explorers Overnight - $65 per participant, including chaperones. Cost includes all-day Zoo admission the day after your Overnight. Sleeping Accommodations: Bring your sleeping bags, pillows, and air mattresses and sleep in classrooms in the education center. Hours: Overnights begin at 7 p.m. and end at 10:30 a.m. the following day. Who: Anyone ages 7-13 (or a little older). The zoo requires one adult chaperone per four participants. How Many: 15-100 people. Smaller groups of 4-14 people may schedule an overnight, but will be put with other groups to meet the minimum number of participants. How Much: $45/person, includes entrance to the Zoo the following day for all participants and chaperones. Sleeping Accommodations: Sleep in your sleeping bag with your pillow. The sleeping location depends on the group size, smaller groups sleep in classrooms, larger groups in the auditorium. The bird and reptile building(s) are also available. Food: Includes a late night snack (eat dinner before you come) and a continental breakfast of cereal, breakfast bars and fruit. Lights Out at the Aquarium will begin again in the Spring of 2010. McKinney RoughsWhat: Wilderness Adventure OvernightsWhere: McKinney Roughs Nature Park, about 45 minutes from Austin. When: On request Hours: 6:00 pm to 4:00 pm the next day Who: Anyone age 6 and older, although this may vary depending on the activities selected. Call or email for details. How Many: Minimum of 30, maximum of 120. How Much: $45/person Sleeping Accommodations: Bring your own bedding (sleeping bags, pillows) and sleep in temperature-controlled dorms on bunk beds Food: S'mores, continental breakfast, hot dog lunch. Activites: Interpretive hike, work on several belt loops and/or pins, including wildlife conservation (with live animal presentations), geology, astronomy, and map & compass. The overnights can be scheduled on another date that will suit your pack if your group meets the required minimum of 30 people. USS LexingtonWhat: "Live Aboard" the USS LEXINGTONWhere: USS Lexington in Corpus Christi, about 3.5 hours from Austin When: Weekends all year long. Two-night programs are also available. Hours: Board between 10:00 and 11:30 in the morning, leave at 10:00 am the next morning. Who: The program is available to all organized youth groups: Church, School, YMCA/YWCA, BSA, GSA, etc. Participants must be at least 5 years of age. One leader is required for every 5 campers. How Many: Each group must have a minimum of 15 persons. How Much: $49/person/night. Sleeping Accommodations: Sleep in berths on the ship. Bring your own pillow and sleeping bag. Food: Includes lunch, dinner, and breakfast. Activites: The overnight stay includes tours of the ship, a movie in the MEGA Theater, bunking in original crew quarters, an unforgettable flag ceremony and so much more! Other tidbits: Most Cub Scouts know about the Lexington. After check-in you'll have several hours free in the afternoon. This is a good time to walk over and spend a few hours at the aquarium. Battleship TexasWhat: Sleep Over on the Battleship TEXASWhere: San Jacinto State Historic Monument, about 4 hours from Austin When: Available any night of the year except holidays and a few selected special dates. Hours: Overnights start at 6:00 and end the next morning at about 10:00. Who: Anyone ages 7-18. How Many: Minimum of 15, maximum of 78. How Much: $35/person in season, $25/person off-season (off-season is June to September) Sleeping Accommodations: Sleep in berths on the ship. Bring your own pillow and sleeping bag. Food: Includes a light breakfast. Eat dinner before boarding the ship. Bring a snack. Activites: Guided tour into parts of the ship that are closed to the public, scavenger hunt. Perform crew duties, learn about the early days of naval aviation, how radar was used, tour the ship and take your meals just like the sailors did more than 50 years ago. Other tidbits: Yes, many Cub Scouts know about the Lexington, but less know about the Battleship Texas. This is a very cool overnight, and quite different from the USS Lexington. Lots of big guns to look at! USS Cavalla and USS StewartWhat: USS Cavalla submarine and destroyer escort USS StewartWhere: Sea Wolf Park, Galveston, about 4.5 hours from Austin When: Call or email for dates. Hours: Sleepovers start at 5:00 pm. Departure the next day is at 9:00 am. Who: Anyone 5 years of age and older. How Many: Minimum of 20, maximum of about 80. How Much: $20/person Sleeping Accommodations: Sleep on one of the ships, the submarine has berths for 40 (but no heat), and the destroyer has berths for an additional 75. Both have air conditioning. Each attendee is required to bring his/her own sleeping bag, pillow, pillowcase and towel. Food: It is recommended the group bring cold foods, such as sandwiches, drinks, chips, etc for dinner and muffins, juices, milk for breakfast, and coolers to carry the food. The group may prefer to order food, such as pizza, and have it delivered. Be advised the closest fast food restaurant or convenience store is five miles from the site. Throwaway plates, eating utensils, etc. are also to be the responsibility of the attendees. Activites: Guided tour of both ships, submarine themed movie, history talks about the ships. When up and running again (which they are hoping will be in the Summer of 2009), plan on booking this at least six months to a year in advance. Houston Museum of Natural ScienceWhat: Scout Overnight at the HMNSWhere: Houston Museum of Natural Science, about 3 hours from Austin. Overnights are both at the museum and at the museum's Xploration Station in the Woodlands. When: Selected weekends, although there are very few Scout Overnights. Check link below for dates and availability. Hours: Check in begins at 7:00 pm on Friday evening and the Overnight continues until 10:00 am on Saturday morning. Who: Scout Overnights are for registered scouts only. No siblings. How Many: The scout overnight is not exclusive to a single group, so everyone signs themselves up. For exclusive group overnights, see "Other Tidbits" below. How Much: $40/person, which includes admission to the Museum’s permanent exhibit halls until the close of business. Sleeping Accommodations: Overnighters sleep among the Museum exhibits in their sleeping bags. Food: Dinner is not included with the Scout Overnight, please eat a full meal before you arrive and be ready for an evening of activities. A late night snack is provided during the evening activities and in the morning a buffet continental breakfast. Activites: Every Scout Overnight includes numerous hands on activities, sleeping among the Museum’s exhibits, a late night snack and continental breakfast. Specific listings of Overnight activities are not released prior to the Overnight event. This allows the Overnight staff the flexibility to plan the best program possible for the groups registered. The cost is $1600 (HMNS members- $64/person for a full group) or $1800 (non-members- $72/person for a full group) for groups up to 25 at the Xploration Station in the Woodlands. Additional people will cost $75/person. This overnight includes a pizza dinner. The cost for a private overnight at the HMNS in Houston is $2250 (members) and $2450 (non-members) for groups of up to 30 for Monday to Friday, and $2550/2750 for Saturdays. Large groups (up to 75 people) have a significantly lower cost per person if you have the maximum number of participants (i.e. 75). These are not priced by participant but rather by the above pricing structure, you have to divide it out by the number in your party to determine the actual cost per person. The HMNS overnights include a planetarium show and other special activities and tours. There are optional upgrades which are not included in this price. Space Center HoustonWhat: Camp-in at Space Center Houston.Where: Southeast Houston, about 3.5 hours from Austin. When: Selected dates. See link below for exact dates. Hours: Check-in begins at 5:00 p.m. Program starts at 6:00 p.m. sharp. End time the next day at 8:45 a.m. Who: Bears and Webelos only. Scouts and chaperones only, no other family members. How Many: Up to 250 scouts per camp-in. These camp-ins are not private events for an individual scout group, and so your group will be there with numerous other scout groups. How Much: $55/scout; $25/adult within 1:4 ratio; $55/adult over 1:4 ratio. Includes admission to the Space Center the next day. Sleeping Accommodations: Your group will be sleeping among the space capsules and exhibits in Starship Gallery and Kids Space Place. Bring a sleeping bag and pillow. Food: Dinner and a light breakfast included. Activites: A great educational experience including Giant Screen films and a private tram tour to Johnson Space Center. Fossil Rim Wildlife CenterWhat: "Wolf Ridge Camp" at Fossil Rim Wildlife CenterWhere: Fossil Rim Park in Glen Rose, about 3 hours from Austin When: Every day, year-round. Call or email for dates. Hours: 10am – 9am the next day. Who: Ages six and older. One chaperone required for every 12 children. How Many: Minimum of 15 people, maximum of 80. How Much: $80/person for groups of 60 or less. $85/person for 60+. Sleeping Accommodations: Accommodations are in simple, screened-in, wood-framed bunk houses with restrooms and shower facilities nearby. Participants bring their own sleeping bags and pillows, as well as their own s’mores fixins. Two bunkhouses are heated and can hold about 20 people (for winter sleepovers). Food: Includes dinner and breakfast. You may bring your own lunches or purchase sack lunches from our café for an additional $6.50 per person.
